There is a largely unidentified but truly remarkable variety of oral changes from drug use and "odd" habits. This clinically oriented lecture will review oral mucosal and jawbone responses and injuries resulting from street drugs, prescription medications, habits and factitial injuries. Taken together, this group of confusing entities is difficult to diagnose and treatment is often problematic. The lecturer has developed this seminar from his long experience with drug addicts in a dental school emergency clinic and four decades of an extremely busy clinical oral pathology practice. This presentation will include a Power Point presentation of more than 500 clinical photos from a dental school urgent care clinic. AGD Code: 730

3 CE HoursCommunicating at all times in an effective, professional manner is most difficult. Choosing the right words and keeping the proper tone of voice is a gift desired by all of us, doctors and team members alike. "Hang on, just, you need to, you should have, waiting room, no problem, I can't, we don't, oooppps" . . . are merely a few of the used and abused words which we are all guilty of using. This lecture will explore some of the most common areas of miscommunication and share easy to remember alternatives to assist you in presenting a more polished image of your practice and of yourself; one that is professional, positive, and promotional. AGD Code: 550

3 CE HoursOutstanding customer service is more essential than ever before. It used to be that we could rely on a quality service or product alone to get people in the door . . . and keep them there. In today's competitive market, however, this is no longer enough to guarantee us success. We must now go above and beyond the patient's expectation in order to satisfy, to more than satisfy. Today, we must commit our doctor and the entire dental team to provide a level of service, regardless of the nature of our business, or dental specialty, to more than satisfy our customers, our valued patients, and keep them returning - to "knock their socks off!" We will discuss how this reality affects our dental practices, whatever our specialty and what we can do to turn our patients into our fans. Patients who love your office: return for repeat service, refer new patients, enjoy better dental health and treatment results through improved cooperation, greater trust, and understood value. Studies show that people with a positive attitude get sick less often, have better relationships, and are more successful in their careers. Attitude is contagious and helps create an energized work environment. It is also a powerful skill to have in dealing with difficult patients and/or staff. Differential diagnosis of orofacial pain is an extremely challenging aspect of dental practice. The complexity of neural networks involving the craniocervical area establishes an environment for much diagnostic confusion. Additionally, a number of conditions exist which share common symptoms or may mimic odontogenic pain. Appropriate treatment and/or referral is dependent upon accurate identification of these diseases, syndromes, or clinical conditions. The morning session will provide a review of current basic concepts of pain mechanisms, pathways, and referral patterns in the head and neck. Discussion will include pain of odontogenic origin, disorders of salivary glands, and neurologic sources of craniofacial pain. The afternoon discussion will encompass anatomic considerations, various headache subgroups, and craniofacial pain of musculoskeletal origin. A protocol for systematic evaluation of the masticatory and cervical regions including vascular and neural structures will be presented. Utilization of various diagnostic anesthetic procedures and consideration of pre-emptive anesthesia/analgesia will be emphasized. Key management considerations will be discussed in both the morning and afternoon.
