SO YOU'RE A COSMETIC DENTIST? SO AM I, SO AM I! Course Code: S4

If you called 100 of your current patients and asked them if you do
"cosmetic dentistry," what would they say? Yes, no, or what's cosmetic
dentistry? Hopefully, you didn't give them a brochure to read, since
brochures, business cards, and logos have nothing to do with practice
promotion. It's all "blah, blah, blah" to your patients. And, they don't
care about you...sorry, your name in lights does not increase patients, case
acceptance, or your lab bill. Learn what you are really saying to your
patients that keep them from choosing cosmetic and restorative treatment.
AGD Code: 557

Following this course attendees will learn:

  •  How your patients make a buying decision and how to have a patient
    centered practice
  •  What you're doing to keep more new patients from coming to your office
  •  The five biggest (and most costly) marketing mistakes most dentists
make and how to avoid them

Chris Brady, DDS, speaks nationally and has authored numerous articles found in publications such as Dental Economics and Contemporary Dental Aesthetics. He sits on the editorial board of Dentist’s Money Digest and currently practices cosmetic and restorative dentistry in Colorado Springs, CO.

Strategies to avoid adverse drug interactions will be discussed, as well as commonly encountered prescribing issues, such as antibiotic resistance and their use as prophylactic treatment. PERIODONTAL MEDICINE AND DENTAL HYGIENE:
BEYOND A CLEANING AND A CHECK-UP – HOW TO
GET A “YES” FOR PERIO TREATMENT
Course Code: S13

The day of just cleaning teeth are over and with it goes the loss leader hygiene department. Current research linking periodontal health, chronic inflammation, and systemic health mandates the need for ongoing preventive and periodontal evaluation and treatment. However, getting to “yes” with the patient is not always easy. Many patients view the hygiene appointment as “just a cleaning and check-up” and it is the most cancelled and failed appointment in dentistry. The result is frustrating for the dental team, an unhealthy situation for the patient and the potential for major financial losses to the practice. From exam to insurance learn to stop giving periodontal services away and gain clinical excellence and profitability.  AGD Code: 495

TMD / VERTICAL DIMENSION LECTURE
Sponsored by Orthodontic Technologies
Course Code: S15

This lecture will summarize, for the general dentist, the etiology of the varying oro-facial pain disorders. There will be an emphasis on differential diagnosis between myofacial pain problems, and intra-capsular disorders. A treatment regime for both the intra-capsular and extra-capsular disorders will be presented and the dentist will learn how to evaluate and treat these problems using occlusal splints. There will be a thorough review of radiography and the pros and cons of the various types of TMJ radiographs currently available. For severe cases, an abbreviated overview of TMJ surgery will be covered, but the aim of the lecture is to prevent TMD problems from getting to the stage where such extensive treatment is required.

The general dentist will leave this lecture with an understanding of how to establish their patient’s correct vertical dimension and understand the relationship of loss of posterior vertical dimension to myalgic facial pain problems. AGD Code: 180

Derek Mahony, BDS, is a visiting lecturer at the PUC-Rio University, Brazil, and practices orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics in Sydney, Australia.  He has presented over 400 lectures on orthodontic topics in more than 30 countries.  He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and is considered a pioneer, throughout the world, in raising dentist’s awareness of the need for early interceptive orthodontic treatment.

ANYTHING BUT THE DENTURE - ALTERNATIVES FOR THE EDENTULOUS LOWER ARCH – A HANDS-ON WORKSHOP
Sponsored by Nobel Biocare
Limited Attendance Workshop
Course Code: S21

Extraction of the last remaining teeth in an arch is sometimes a difficult decision. The use of residual abutments to stabilize and retain a denture as an overdenture is nothing new, but often misunderstood. This course will address the option of overdenture with natural teeth or implants as the abutments. We will discuss how the number and location of abutments will influence the final design of the overdenture itself. Overdentures are different on implants than they are on teeth and a discussion on those differences and options to make them similar will be included. Each participant will learn how many implants are necessary and where they should be placed. Attachment options currently on the market will be reviewed.  Attendees will complete a pick-up of an attachment under a complete denture. The denture and model can be taken home as a demonstrator model for patient education. AGD Code: 673

Following this course attendees will

  • Learn basic overdenture design principles: on implants and natural teeth
  • Know how the number and location of abutments influences the outcome
  • Know how the anatomic limitations influence the number of abutments
  • Learn attachment options: is one better than another
  • Identify impression techniques:  not just rubber base
  • Incorporate prosthesis delivery and post op maintenance

Supplies Participants should bring:

  • Full syringe of PVS impression material
  • Mixing gun
  • Four mixing tips

IMPROVE YOUR PARTIALS: SIMPLE MATERIAL,
TECHNIQUES, AND DESIGN PRINCIPLES – WORKSHOP
Sponsored by Nobel Biocare
Limited Attendance Workshop
Course Code: S22

Restorative dentists and dental technicians will use actual patient models to design three different partial cases of varying difficulty. By incorporating basic removable partial denture design principles participants will learn the most prevalent clinical variations. Free-end saddles, tooth-borne cases, attachments, and rotational path designs will be discussed. Framework design is less important in overall case success than framework fit and saddle adaptation. Participants will move beyond framework design and use dentistry’s most familiar materials to create simple, quick impression techniques that keep cost low and increase accuracy. In addition, participants explore the difficulties of the altered cast technique. The clinical use of the altered cast is no longer necessary. An improved method of recording the free-end saddle is offered, which offers significant confidence and higher patient satisfaction. Participants leave with a greater confidence in knowing how to improve removable partial denture treatment. AGD Code: 672
