T15 – Optimizing Nutrition For Oral Health And Beyond

A broad and diverse body of evidence shows the direct link between dietary intake, nutritional deficiencies and oral health. The dental professional is uniquely situated to identify many nutritional shortcomings and frank deficiencies during the oral exam. This lecture explores the relationship between dietary patterns, macronutrients, micronutrients, and oral and human health.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to discuss the current evidence for micronutrient deficiencies in the United States, including at-risk populations
  • Participants will be able to identify the oral presentation of key micronutrient deficiencies to enable better identification during the oral exam
  • Participants will be able to describe the relationship between glycemic index/load, diabetes and oral health to better counsel patients
