T35 – You’re Saving Teeth, But Are You Saving Lives? Intro To Dental Sleep Medicine

This course will provide 3 hours of education in sleep-disordered breathing as
mandated by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, Rule 108.12

Dental sleep medicine is one of fastest growing areas of dentistry. This lecture will provide an overview of snoring, OSA, sleep bruxism, and the untreated health ramifications. This fast-paced course will raise your awareness of OSA and get your practices started in screening and testing their patients for OSA.

Learning Objectives:
• Understand Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and why dentists should be involved in dental sleep medicine
• Learn about the spectrum of sleep disordered breathing from snoring to OSA
• Understand the relationship of sleep bruxism to OSA
• Gain knowledge about the scope of the problem and an understanding of how many patients are walking through the dental office doors every day who might have this disease
• Learn OSA terminology so you can speak confidently with your medical colleagues
• Learn the health risks associated with sleep disordered breathing
• Recognize the signs, symptoms, and behaviors that may indicate sleep disordered breathing
• Review the current treatment modalities for snoring and sleep apnea
• Learn a simple and effective way to “screen” your existing patient population for sleep related disorders
• Learn methods to facilitate sleep testing for “at risk” patients
• Have a high-level understanding of the systems needed to implement dental sleep medicine into a dental practice
