T13 – Expand Your Practice Potential Treating Patients With Disabilities

Using case study examples, teams of dentists, hygienists and assistants will learn a step-by-step process to plan and complete care for adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities and geriatric patients. Behavioral strategies using families as partners will be emphasized to reduce the need for anesthesia. Participants will learn to identify and overcome the social determinants that become barriers to care for persons with intellectual disabilities and geriatric patients. The role of a care navigator in an office and communication will be emphasized. Participants will learn interdisciplinary collaborative treatment planning with dental offices integrated into virtual health homes with therapists, behavioral specialists and physicians. A dentist and dental hygienist who are parents of adolescent and adult children with autism will present their secrets to success in family support and incremental learning models of care and how to incorporate these approaches in practice strategic management plan.

Learning Objectives:

  • The depth of the oral health disparity for adults with intellectual disabilities will be explored and the impact of oral health on mortality that has provided opportunity for general dentists to expand their practice and expertise.
  • Participants will learn the new ADA Code of Ethics changes to ensure their office meets the new standards of appropriate treatment for adults with intellectual disabilities and geriatric needs.
  • Participants will learn alternative dental delivery, incremental behavioral approaches with families, innovative treatment and use of technology to improve oral health disparities in vulnerable populations. Dental teams will learn how to grow a practice and become a community leader for an “Office without Walls”.
